According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), total shipments of portland and blended cement, including imports, in the United States and Puerto Rico in May 2026 were an estimated 8.94 million metric tons (Mt), a 0.3% increase from shipments in May 2025.
Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 39.5 Mt, a 4.0% increase from those for the same period in 2025. Of total blended tonnage reported year-to-date in 2026, 23.9 Mt (96%) was estimated to be portland-limestone cement (Type IL); the leading destination for Type IL shipments by tonnage was Texas.
The leading producing states for portland and blended cement in May 2026 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Michigan; these states accounted for 38.1% of cement produced.
The leading cement-consuming states (Texas, California, Florida, Ohio and Illinois, in descending order) received 37.5% of shipments in May.
Masonry cement shipments totaled an estimated 163,000 metric tons (t) in May 2026, a 14.1% decrease from those in May 2025. Shipments for the year through May totaled an estimated 779,000 t, a decrease of 9.4% from those for the same period in 2025.
The leading masonry cement-consuming states in May 2026 were, in descending order, Florida, Texas, North Carolina, California and Georgia; these states received 53.8% of shipments in May.
Clinker production, excluding Puerto Rico, totaled an estimated 6.67 Mt in May 2026, a 3.2% increase from that in May 2025. Production for the year through May totaled an estimated 26.5 Mt, a 6.2% increase from the same period in 2025.
The leading clinker-producing states in May 2026 were, in descending order, Texas, Missouri, California, Florida and Alabama.
Import data from the U.S. Census Bureau; however, reveals that data for clinker imports into the Detroit and Seattle customs districts do not include material trucked in from Canada on an informal-entry basis.
Monthly imports can show significant year-over-year changes for a variety of reasons and commonly do not correlate well with consumption levels in the respective import districts in the same month.
May 2026 imports of cement and clinker, including the San Juan, PR, customs district, totaled 2.61 Mt, a 4.1% increase from May 2025. Imports for the year through May totaled 10.0 Mt, an increase of 2.2% from those for the same period in 2025.
An estimate for cement imported by independent importers not participating in the USGS surveys is provided but import volumes do not correlate well with consumption levels by domestic final customers in many of the respective
import districts.
Customs districts affected include, but are not limited to, Houston-Galveston, TX; Miami; New Orleans; Philadelphia; Savannah, Ga.; and Tampa, Fla.
