Amrize has partnered with Concrete Strategies on full-scale field trials for a major industry study released earlier this year by the ACI Foundation, American Cement Association (ACA) and the Concrete Advancement Foundation (CAF).
The research evaluated the abrasion resistance and carbonation performance of portland-limestone cement (PLC, Type IL) systems for industrial floor applications, providing third-party validation that properly designed Type IL concrete mixes can deliver the durability required for demanding facilities such as data centers, warehouses and distribution centers while reducing embodied carbon.
As industrial owners increasingly seek lower-carbon construction materials, questions remain within the industry about whether blended cement systems can match the long-term performance of conventional concrete.
Led by Temple University Principal Investigator Mehdi Khanzadeh Moradllo, Ph.D., P.E., the study compared traditional concrete with lower-carbon Type IL systems through laboratory testing and full-scale field trials.
The findings showed that, when properly proportioned, placed and finished, Type IL concrete systems performed comparably to conventional concrete made with traditional Type I/II in abrasion resistance, supporting their use in large industrial slabs without compromising durability. The lab-to-field correlation also provided an important foundation for future performance-based industry standards and guidance.
