CalPortland plans to lay off 53 employees at its Redding cement plant in California, effective June 15, due to a decline in cement demand in the northern portion of the state. The company intends to reverse the cuts once market conditions improve.
“This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it has on our employees and their families,” CalPortland President Bill Mullen said in a news release. “We are committed to supporting our affected employees during this period and will provide resources to assist them through the transition.”
According to local media, 42 hourly and 11 salaried staff members were informed they were being terminated. Several fired employees are members of the Steel Workers United Local 1986 chapter. A union member shared with KRCR News Channel 7 that they were concerned the terminations were not based on seniority, and said local union members planned to sit down with the company in the coming weeks to discuss.
Despite the layoffs, CalPortland said production at the Redding plant will continue at full capacity.
